We all love to hear stories of the average person stepping up to the plate in times of crisis and helping others but there’s a particular attraction to moments when someone with super-stardom shows they are humans too.
Atlanta rapper, Future, is one of those people and has earned this month’s #BeBetterHero because of it.
On July 8, the High Off Life rapper announced he had launched a “I'm Still a Dreamer” scholarship for incoming college freshmen through his own non-profit, FreeWishes Foundation. For 2020 graduates of the state of Georgia who plan to attend a public or private college or university in the fall, those who successfully apply will be awarded up to $2,500 USD in scholarship funding.
Not only is his foundation battling the financial costs the pandemic is continually placing on disadvantaged students but its also using its national voice in the conversation around protective masks.
In 2017, the rapper exploded onto the scene with a smashing hit, “Mask Off”. Now, he hopes to inspire people to wear masks and has evolved to directly respond to the shortage of face masks for medical workers and COVID-19 patients.
With Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) recently signing an executive order voiding masks mandates imposed by some local governments, Future’s ability to raise awareness about the need to wear protective masks in the Peach State is urgently needed.
Do you have a story of someone using their celebrity status for good? We’d love to hear from you so write to us and describe why they should be featured in one of our next #BeBetterHero posts!
if you haven’t already, please consider making a tax-exempt donation to help us provide partial scholarships to low-income students attending college.
We hope each and every one of you are staying safe during such unprecedented times. Please remember to look out for those in need and try your best to stay connected to others if you’re practicing self-quarantine or social-distancing.
